Reid Crowned Champion At Kirkistown

Justin Reid took yet another clean sweep of race wins and maximum points to win the 2009 P&O Winter Supermoto Series in style at a wet and windy Kirkistown race circuit at the weekend, the Comber rider dominating the Ulster Aerials Quad class to add his name to the list of winners of the prestigious Kevin Martin Memorial Trophy. Travelling down the Ards Peninsula to the superb venue needing just twelve points from the 4th and final round, Justin quickly showed that he had no intentions of taking the easy option as he put in a dominant display to clinch the title he last won in 2002.

Despite heavy rain and gale force winds making for miserable conditions at the Killinchy & District MCC promoted event, Justin’s skill and determination came to the fore as he blitzed the field to remain fastest rider throughout the day, taking pole position before delivering lights to flag victories in the first two heats, with a winning margin of almost twenty-five seconds in the opening ten lap race, but his outstanding performance in the final outing of the day had the paddock talking long after the meeting had drawn to a close.

Running 7th at the end of the opening lap after a poor start, the former British and Ulster Champion showed why he is the outright lap record holder around the 0.9 mile Kirkistown circuit, Justin, lapping almost two-and-a-half seconds faster than his nearest rival as he treated the crowd to an exhibition of riding skills to take the lead six laps later, his pass for the lead around the outside on the exit from the shale section a candidate for pass of the series before cruising to a comfortable four second win.

Justin’s domination and consistency throughout the fifteen heats of the four-round series have been truly outstanding and will be difficult to beat.  In addition to taking three of the four overall wins, Justin has won eleven of the fifteen heats with seven of those wire to wire, taken the runner up spot in three of the four heats not won, qualified pole twice, taken fastest lap of the race seven times and has led seventy-seven of the one-hundred and twenty laps in total!

Speaking after the event Justin commented, ‘Fair play to the club, all the marshals and track personnel who braved the conditions toady to enable us to race. Between the wind and rain, it was absolutely horrendous this morning – it was crazy how much later you could brake at the end of the main straight simply due to the head wind. Once I had the Championship wrapped up I decided to hang back at the start of the last race and try to come through the field. I had a lot of fun and it worked out well with some good wheel to wheel racing… Huge thanks to my mechanics Tommy and Jim for all their invaluable help through the series. It’s great to finish the season on a high!’
